Instagram has no messages-only mode, but on a computer you can get close. Bookmark
instagram.com/direct/inbox/
so Instagram opens straight to your messages, and add a Chrome extension such as
Dumbstagram to hide Reels, Stories, Explore and suggested posts. On
your phone there is no clean way to do it, only ways to make it less tempting.
Why is it so hard to use Instagram just for messages?
Because messages are the bait. In September 2025 Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, said almost all of Instagram’s growth has been driven by DMs, Reels and recommendations, and that the app would be reoriented around them. In the March 2026 redesign the bottom bar became Home, Reels, DMs, Search, Profile: your inbox now sits right next to Reels, which takes the center spot, and you can’t change the order. Reels already took 50% of the time people spend in the app in 2024. So opening Instagram to answer one message often turns into twenty minutes of something else.
Instagram did once make a messages-only app. It was called Direct, ran as a test from December 2017, and was shut down in 2019.
How do I use Instagram only for DMs on a computer?
- Bookmark your inbox. Save instagram.com/direct/inbox/ and open it instead of instagram.com. You skip the feed entirely. Inside the site, your messages are also under Messages in the menu on the left.
- Hide the rest. Install Dumbstagram, a free Chrome extension. It hides Reels, the Stories tray, Explore, ads and suggested posts on instagram.com, and leaves your DMs and the Following feed. Nothing to tap into by accident.
- Switch it off when you want to. One toggle in the Chrome toolbar restores normal Instagram, and one more turns the calm version back on.
What helps on iPhone and Android?
There is no DMs-only setting in the app. These native tools reduce the pull:
- Daily limit. Profile → Menu → under How you use Instagram, tap Time management → Daily limit. You get a reminder after the time you choose (Help Center).
- Sleep mode. Also under Time management. At the times you set, it pauses notifications, auto-replies to messages and shows a moon instead of your active status (Help Center).
- Following feed. If you do open Home, tap Instagram at the top left and choose Following to skip suggested posts. See how to see only Following on Instagram.
The question comes up constantly in communities like r/nosurf and r/digitalminimalism. The cleanest answer is to delete the app and check messages on a computer, where the page can be cleaned up. Be careful with third-party “DMs only” apps and modified Instagram clients: they ask for your Instagram password inside software Instagram didn’t make.
Questions
Can you use Instagram only for messages?
Not with an official setting. On a computer you can get close by opening instagram.com/direct/inbox/ and hiding the rest of Instagram with an extension like Dumbstagram. In the app, the feed and Reels are always one tap away.
Is there an Instagram app just for DMs?
Not anymore. Instagram tested a standalone app called Direct from December 2017 and shut it down in 2019, moving conversations back into the main app.
Can I send Instagram DMs from a computer?
Yes. On instagram.com, click Messages in the menu on the left, or go straight to instagram.com/direct/inbox/.
Does Dumbstagram read my messages?
No. Dumbstagram stores one on/off switch on your own device and sends nothing anywhere. It needs no login and runs only on instagram.com.
